EDGE Scholars enter the program at the age where young men experience their first cognitive steps into adulthood, independence, and self-actualization. Creating one's own narrative is intended to equip them with the tools and confidence to develop a positive self-image and to make choices consistent with that image, in whatever pathways they decide for themselves.
Our Scholars also transition through the program at points in life where the consequences associated with their choices increase and flippant or poorly made decisions have high costs. As young men of color, there is an even greater cost than for boys from other backgrounds who enjoy various privilege. Emphasizing the power of choice is intended to help maintain as many options for them as possible, while keeping the path toward creating their own narrative unencumbered.
At its core, EDGE is intended to produce leaders on various levels throughout our communities. Young men who lead by example, having learned from the examples shown to them by EDGE Mentors and from their fellow Scholars. The end result is that they will model behaviors that will provide examples of service and leadership to those around them and for future generations, and so on and so forth, creating a perpetual chain of impact.
